The course covers the background to the Arts & Crafts Movement with Ruskin and Morris. It looks at the development of the Arts & Crafts garden as a complement to the house through Blomfield, Robinson, Lorimer (The Scottish Pleasaunce), Sedding, Baillie Scott, Mawson, Lutyens/Jekyll, etc. These will be illustrated by examples in Hertfordshire from Mawson’s Rose Garden at Bushey, Lutyens/Jekyll at Knebworth, New Town design (Letchworth/Welwyn/Hatfield Cockaigne Estate, etc) and some just over the border in Edgware (CE Mallows at Cannons, Mawson at Hampstead). The essential elements of an Arts & Crafts garden and why it is important will also be covered.
