An Exploration of CambridgeDay: Thursdays from 28th April 2011Time: 10.00 am - 12 noonRoom: Garden
In this course we’ll explore the nature of both town and University and the complex relationship between them. Cambridge has a fascinating history, like any ancient market town, from its Roman road and Norman castle mound to its railway station, markets and traffic schemes, but the establishment of England’s second university in the Middle Ages produced very distinct physical and social changes.
We’ll look at the University and the Colleges as institutions, as well as their buildings and gardens, and how they have changed over the centuries. Simultaneously we’ll look at Cambridge as a town, and its commercial and social make-up. We’ll use maps from the past, and other historic sources, as well as looking at views of its present attractions.
10 week term. Fees £75 plus annual Settlement Membership - £18/£13 - paid once, irrespective of number of courses attended.
