A bit of calligraphy will also be introduced and different styles of Chinese Brush Painting will be discussed and tried. A starter kit of ink/brushes/paper will be available from the Tutor for £6.

Creative Stitchery (Hand Embroidery) Tutor: Jan SimpsonDay: Thursdays from 12th January 2012 Time: 1.30 pm - 3.30 pm Room: Spinks This class is for all hand embroiderers and will cater for beginners and returnees as well as those who are experienced. The Tutor will provide projects and tuition each term and over a period of time aim to cover a wide variety of styles and techniques both traditional and modern in application. Those who wish to work on their own projects, using the Tutor’s knowledge and expertise to enhance their own skills as and when required are more than welcome in this class. Those who wish to expand their horizons and try techniques new to them will also be catered for. The class will be informal and fun and students will be encouraged to collaborate with each other, sharing their growing confidence and knowledge. Whilst long term the students will be encouraged to design their own projects, the Tutor will always be able to provide design work and resources for them.
N.B. Students will need to bring their own reading/sewing glasses and a magnifier if they normally use one. They will need their normal sewing kit and a good pair of small pointed embroidery scissors. The course is aimed at those who want to learn how to use a commercial pattern and sew garments of their own choice, eg maxi dress, skirt, trousers etc. Students will learn about pattern layout and they will have the opportunity to carry out alterations to patterns to get an accurate fit.

Run by a Royal School of Needlework trained Tutor, this class is for anyone interested in embroidery. Beginners, returnees and those who already enjoy the craft are welcome. Projects will be available for all levels (some indication of skill level required should be noted when booking the course). Anyone who wishes to do their own project (maybe kit purchased and then abandoned for lack of knowledge) is also welcome on this course. The atmosphere will be relaxed and informal and students will gradually accumulate skills in many forms of embroidery.
N.B. Students will need to bring their glasses, magnifier etc. Each student will need a good sharp pair of embroidery scissor, and at least one wooden hoop (one small about 6 inch and one about 9 inch would be ideal). Students will need to bring their glasses, magnifier etc. Each student will need a good sharp pair of embroidery scissor, and at least one wooden hoop (one small about 6 inch and one about 9 inch would be ideal). During the 10 week course, participants will learn to paint an icon in the traditional manner using egg tempera paint and gold leaf on gesso. Egg tempera is a fascinating medium to work with, producing glowing colours and great depth. It can be applied opaquely or in translucent washes. The masterpieces of the middle ages panels and illuminations were produced with egg tempera, and the medium is enjoying a revival by modern artists who appreciate its unique qualities. We will learn by the ancient method of following a prototype the Tutor will provide a range of suitable historical images to choose from or you may bring your own. We will also study a little of the history and meaning of this ancient religious art form. No special skills or previous art experience are necessary to produce a beautiful painting and beginners are most welcome. Classes in the second and third terms will be suitable for both beginners and returners wanting to paint a new image.
The materials charge of £10, payable on booking, covers the specialist items (gesso support, set of eight pigments, gold leaf, size etc) required for the project, and can be waived if you prefer to bring your own. A brief list of other useful equipment (brushes etc) is available when booking.
