This course is ideal for anyone who wants to be a bit adventurous in painting with watercolours, even if you haven’t ever tried it before. With a combination of demonstration and discussion, including composition and some drawing skills, these classes will take you through the basic skills you need to start painting, using the characteristics of this much loved medium: clear and transparent but full of light and colour. Subjects vary widely from sea and landscapes, people, pets and portraits, still-life, flowers etc., journeying from a basic palette to including less familiar paints and mediums.

Each lesson begins with an approachable practical experiment that is later developed using various materials such as acrylic paints, watercolours, pen and ink and collage. All will be demonstrated to understand how the materials can be used in each session and constant guidance will be given throughout the course. Develop your cake decorating skills. Learn professional techniques by using traditional and modern design, and using a variety of sugars which include: royal icing, buttercream, sugarpaste, pastillage and flower paste. You will experience working with sugarpaste, modelling cake toppers, using texture and colour, making bespoke flowers from flower paste. Develop piping skills to a professional standard. All of this in a friendly environment. Demonstration, group discussion, and the use of tutorial sheets, enhance the learning experience. This course is suitable for mixed abilities.

Wired and Unwired Sugar Flowers for All Occasions

Learners will develop modelling skills enabling them to make flowers to a professional standard. This includes studying the delicate make up of flowers and their foliage. Both botanical and stylised flowers will be produced. Shortcuts, enabling learners to achieve a good result will also be taught. Modern cake design encourages the use of larger single flowers. This is a technique that looks at new ideas, and will be looked at during the course. Beautiful flowers are a focal point on a cake. Flowers will be made by using cutters, and by the pulling method. A tutorial sheet accompanies each flower that is made. This course is suitable for mixed abilities.

This is a 5 week course painting fruit and vegetables using either watercolour or coloured pencils. Week by week Jill will be giving demonstrations to show those attending how to draw, use composition to show off your fruit or vegetables, colour mixing to achieve accuracy of colour with watercolour, creating bloom on fruits, shine, and on separate weeks how to use coloured pencils. Beginners to Botanical Art and those that are more experienced will all be welcome. If there is a particular fruit or vegetable that you wish to paint please bring this along – this will depend on what is available to purchase, at this time of year.
