Napoleon's political and military legacy is infamous. But how did his conquests affect the exchange of ideas? This course will explore the international cultural developments leading to a rise in radical thought and to the revolutions of 1848.

We will discuss the psychology of happiness, art and music, enjoyment, spirituality and religion. We will investigate why we smoke, drink and take drugs and the development of addictive behaviour. We will consider approaches to the understanding of consciousness and our sense of self.

Thematic Core Module: 'Settlement in the Landscape'
Camps and farmsteads, villages and cities, long lived or temporary settlements are nodes in the landscape. With documetary and archealogical evidence, we investigate patterns of residence in Britain's various regions and environments through more than 2000 years, showing how geography, social structures, values, politics and economics have determined location and development.

Using specific examples mainly from Britain, we will examine the extent to which rock type and structure (the disposition of the rocks) influence our wonderful variety of landforms such as mountains and hills, valleys and lakes, tors, cliffs and scars.

Core Module B : 'Aspects of Analysis'
This module includes the critical analysis of a novel, anthology or biography of the student's choice and an introduction to literary theory. Students are also encouraged to explore the distinctions between biography, autobiography, fact and fiction and to analyse the differences in structure between novels, short stories and genre fiction. Discussion on how to present work for publication and how to research markets also forms a part of the module.

The Eighteenth-Century country houses are great works of art in the hands of Kent, Adam and others. But we also see how these houses represent a society in rapid change.

Event:   The Art of the Book: The Illuminated Manuscript         Tutor:   Dr Andreas Petzold

This course will provide you with a general survey of major developments in the history of book illumination from early Christian period to the Renaissance. There will be case studies on special themes such as the Book of Hours. The course will include a visit to Fitzwilliam Museum.

We analyse four award-winning titles to determine current trends in contemporary fiction and to consider what characterises the exciting work (from UK, Canada, Spain) created by the writers represented.

Event:   The Problem of Evil         Tutor:   Dr Karim Esmail

The existence of evil in the world provides the most important grounds (in philosophy) to doubt God's existence. This course will consider the problem of evil, the varieties of the problem which have emerged in the course of its consideration by philosophers and some of the solutions which have been proposed.

Enrolment not required.  Settlement membership required.

Social evening plus full weekly programme.  Cycle time trials are held near Old Warden throughout the summer on Tuesday evenings, and each Sunday a Club-run social ride leaves Hitchin at 9 am.

Group:   Letchworth Garden City Camera Club

We are a group of people who are interested in photography and meet to share their common interest and to try to improve their standards.

We have a wide range of membership from beginners to experienced workers and hope to provide something for everyone, whether they are interested in colour slides, or in colour or monochrome prints. Techniques are always changing and most of us are now  interested in digital photography, with all its opportunities and frustrations. We have no formal course of instruction, but experienced members are always available to give advice, and we frequently exchange hints and tips. Please try us for a few meetings before you decide to join. Enrolment not required.
