This talk reviews the development of various national varieties of Art Nouveau at the turn of the 20th century.  It also points out the connections and differences between Art Nouveau and the national varieties of what became known as Art Deco in the 1920s.

Name: Dr Alex Seago

Bio: Dr Alex Seago is currently Emeritus Professor of Cultural Studies at Richmond American University, London. His Ph.D is from the Royal College of Art in Cultural History and his MA is in American Studies from the University of Kansas.  Dr Seago is the author of ‘Burning the Box of Beautiful Things: The Development of a Postmodern Sensibility’ published by Oxford University Press in 1995. The book is a study of cultural change and graphic design at the Royal College of Art between 1950-1965. More recently, Dr Seago co-edited (with Dr. Anne Massey) ‘Pop Art and Design’ (Bloomsbury, 2017) a collection of essays about the development of various types of visual pop art and design in Britain between 1945-1975.  Dr Seago is currently teaching undergraduate courses focusing on British Popular Culture, Design History, and Post-War American Art.
