SETTLEMENT QUIZ – RESULTS
Thank you to everyone who emailed to say how much they enjoyed the quiz, it gives us a nice warm glow! We don’t know your geographic distribution but we do know one quizzer took part from his hospital bed and would like to send him our best wishes.
Here’s a few things we thought may interest you:
- Dating wood using tree rings is called dendrochronology but most teams said dendrology, which is the study of trees.
- Despite being on BBC4 twice a day for many months, very few people knew Bob Ross is known for the phrase ‘Happy little trees’ – but we’re glad to hear you didn’t spend all your time in lockdown glued to the TV.
- We love it when people don’t know the correct answer so send an entry to entertain us. We particularly enjoyed the suggestion that the scientific name for holly is spikyus leafus. Similarly, it’s always good to know there’s a doctor in the house – they not only said that Bell’s palsy affects the face but elaborated with “lower motor neurone lesion of the facial nerve” (plus a smiley!)
- You will see we didn’t need to use the tie-breaker question in the end but did enjoy some of your answers: one team suggested Father Christmas travels at speeds measured in tinsel light seconds, while another one worried about a potential sonic boom.
Finally, we would like to wish you all a happy Christmas, albeit a bit different to usual, and to invite you to our next quiz for LALG on Sunday 27 December at 7pm – similar to this one but no entry fee and no prizes!
Talking of prizes – congratulations to our winners All the Ws – the Settlement will be in touch regarding your prize. And commiserations to The Carrot Cakes and Sir Quiz Whitty, who were just pipped at the post.
