Illustrated lecture followed by questions and discussion.

This lecture seeks to explain the origins of the terrible conflict of recent years. It covers the period from the 1880s to the foundation of the state of Israel in 1948. It begins with the birth of Zionism in the late 19th century and the Balfour Declaration of 1917. It looks at the growing conflict between Jews and Palestinians under the British mandate and ends with the conflicts marking the birth of Israel.

Name: Michael Williams

Bio: Michael has an undergraduate degree in History and an MSc in Politics. For 21 years he worked as a ministerial adviser in Whitehall before leaving for academic life in 1995. He spent another 26 years teaching a great variety of courses in different universities until retiring in 2021. He’s been teaching courses on politics and history at the Settlement for ten years. He published a book on Britain since 1867 in 2000 and two personal memoirs since 2022.
