CONSTITUTION
Every charity has to have a governing document that explains how it is run. This document provides information on:
- The charity’s purpose
- Who runs it and how they run it
- How trustees will be appointed
- Rules about trustees’ expenses and other payments to trustees
- How to close the charity
Originally, to attend the Settlement, you had to be a subscriber which entitled you to join classes. When the Settlement was registered as a charity in 1963, this requirement was enshrined in its Constitution. As a membership charity, there are some decisions that can only be made by the wider membership, rather than just the trustees. For the Settlement, these decisions include electing the trustees and approving any changes to the Constitution.
Over the years the Constitution has been updated to reflect changes at the Settlement and to comply with best practice as the governance of charities has increased. The Settlement’s most recent Constitution was approved by Members at the Annual General Meeting held on 22 November 2022.
