Manager Recruitment

Job 2860035 1920 updated2

We are looking for a new Manager to start working with us from the beginning of 2026.

The Settlement is a 100 year old organisation based in the middle of the world’s first Garden City.  You will work in a unique Grade II listed building, the old Skittles Inn, built in 1907, which has been a centre for adult education since 1920.

We are a registered charity, providing a wide range of courses, workshops and events to the local community.  We are looking for a new Manager to build on the achievements of our current one.   Over the last few years he has increased the number of courses offered, developed our Easter and Summer Schools and recently introduced our Saturday Morning School.  We have also invested in our facilities and IT, and in 2024 implemented a new database and website.

Our new Manager should have a passion for and commitment to adult education, community development and the arts, with the energy, vision and skills to help us to continue to develop our offer and the use of our facilities. The Manager is responsible for all aspects of the efficient and effective running of the Settlement, which includes the management of our varied educational programme and hirings, and for ensuring that the operational and administrative functions are carried out as efficiently as possible.

The Manager reports to the Settlement’s Trustees.

The Manager is ‘the face’ of the Settlement and this post offers an excellent opportunity to make a personal contribution to a unique organisation.  There is a huge amount of scope to make the role your own, and to bring new ideas and a fresh outlook. We are looking for someone who is both keen to join our community, is committed to delivering excellence in all areas and excited at the opportunity to leave their mark upon it.

The job description, person specification and application form are below.  Completed forms should be emailed to recruitment@letchworthsettlement.org.uk.

Salary: £37,500 – £40,000 p.a. for a 37.5 hour week, worked flexibly depending on operational requirements.

Closing date: Wednesday 10 September.

Interviews will take place on Friday 26 September or Monday 29 September.

Start date: Monday 5 January 2026 or earlier, subject to negotiation.

Keep Up to Date

We no longer produce an annual brochure. This is simply because things change so quickly—we're always adding new courses, workshops and events, and a printed brochure can’t keep up! Not printing the brochure also helps us save on costs, so we can spend more on improving the activities and facilities we offer.

But don’t worry—getting the latest information is still easy. You can find up-to-date details of all our courses, workshops and events on our website, and we continue to put notices on the boards inside the Settlement building, just as before.

If you’d like up to date information sent straight to you, please sign up for our regular Settlement Newsletter. It’s a friendly way to stay in the loop, and we’re here to help if you need a hand with anything.
